AL wins absolute majority to form government

The ruling Awami League has won an absolute majority to form the government in the 12th parliamentary elections. Of the 299 seats, Awami League won 159, Jatiya Party 7 and independent candidates 42.

According uofficial results announced by the returning officers in the districts and the Election Commission's website the above results are found.

Earlier on Sunday (January 7), voting began simultaneously in 299 seats out of 300 seats. The election in Naogaon-2 constituency has been suspended due to the death of a candidate.

The voting ended at 4 pm amid allegations of violence, sabotage, rigging and obstruction of voting. However, there were reports of peaceful voting in many seats.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal said the voter turnout was around 40 percent.

CEC said, "There are some challenges in elections under a partisan government. The government's will was to hold a free, fair and neutral election, from that point of view, there was sincerity and cooperation from the government."
