AL wins 12th National Election, Hasina to form forth consecutive govt

The ruling Awami League has won an absolute majority to form the government in the 12th parliamentary elections. Of the 299 seats, Awami League won 200 seats. Jatiya Party wins 12 seats while a record number of 61 independent candidates win this race. 26 candidates from other political parties won in their seats.

According uofficial results announced by the returning officers in the districts and the Election Commission's website the above results are found.

Earlier on Sunday (January 7), voting began simultaneously in 299 seats out of 300 seats. The election in Naogaon-2 constituency has been suspended due to the death of a candidate.

The voting ended at 4 pm amid few violent incidents, and allegations of sabotage, rigging and obstruction of voting. However, there were reports of peaceful voting in many seats.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal said the voter turnout was around 40 percent.

CEC said, "There are some challenges in elections under a partisan government. But this time government's will was to hold a free, fair and neutral election, and from that point of view, there was sincerity and cooperation from the government."

He thanked the nation for participating in a peaceful election this year.

As Bangladesh Awami League has won absolute majority they will form a new government under the leadership of it’s president and prime minister Sheikh Hasina as per constitutional process. It shall be consecutive fourth term of AL government under her leadership.
