A case has been filed against 40 unidentified persons including mentioning names of 20 persons in the case of robbery at Bagerhat's Rampal thermal power station. Police have already arrested 12 people in this case.
On Thursday (April 4) night and Friday (April 5) morning, Rampal police station raided various areas of Rampal upazila and arrested them for questioning. Later, they were arrested in a case filed in connection with the robbery. Officer-in-charge (OC) of Rampal police station Soumen Das confirmed this information.
The attack took place at the gate of the residential building of the thermal power plant at around 11:30 pm on Wednesday (April 3). Five security personnel including two Ansar members were injured in the attack by armed robbers. The injured have been rescued and admitted to the hospital.
Anwarul Azim, deputy general manager of the thermal power station, said that Ansar Battalion Havildar Md. Shahidul Islam on Thursday night filed the case as plaintiff.
Eleven of the 12 accused arrested in the case were sent to the court on Friday (April 5) afternoon. Senior Judicial Magistrate of Bagerhat Cognizance Court-2 Md. Kamrul Azad sent the accused to jail.
The arrested persons are, Md. Manik Sheikh (35), Md. Fazlu Gazi (55), Md. Salam Sheikh (30), Md. Moni Gazi (40), Md. Noor Nabi Sheikh (19), Md. Asad Molla (33), Md. Abdullah (33), Md. Bayjid (37), Md. Rubel Sheikh (26), Md. Manjur Gazi (28), Md. Asabur Ghazi (29).
All their homes are in Rampal Upazila. Police arrested these accused from different areas on Thursday as suspects before filing the case. Besides, an accused named Asabur Gazi, who was shot on the day of the incident, is under treatment at Khulna Medical College Hospital in police custody.
According to the case, around 10:30 PM on Wednesday night, the security personnel shouted when they saw a gang of 50-60 armed robbers breaking through the boundary wall of the material yard of the Rampal thermal power station's third tower. The armed men attacked the security personnel.
At one point, when Ansar members came forward, they were also attacked. Security supervisor Akram, watchman Sheikh Saidul Islam, Mintu Bairagi, Brozen Mondal and Ansar Battalion Habildar Kamal Pasha were seriously injured. To save lives and protect government property, Kamal Pasha fired 30 rounds with a firearm SMG issued in his own name. Then the gunmen fled. At this time, the gang members took 1,500 kg of iron. The estimated value of which is Tk. 90 thousand. Among the injured, Kamal Pasha and Mintu Bairagi are undergoing treatment at Khulna Medical College Hospital and three others at Rampal Upazila Health Complex.
Rampal police station officer-in-charge (OC) Soumen Das said that an Ansar member has filed a case in connection with the attempted robbery of the thermal power plant and looting of goods. In the case, 11 Ejahar named accused have been sent to jail on the orders of the court. Another arrested accused is undergoing treatment at Khulna Medical College Hospital. Police operation to arrest other accused is continuing.
