The Teachers' Association of Chattogram University (CU) has taken initiative to buy 5 oxygen and pulse oxymeters for the teachers of the university. Moreover, the Teachers' Association has strongly demanded the university authorities to take initiative to set up two isolation centers on campus and in Chattogram city for any teacher who is infected with Covid-19.
These demands were raised by the CU Teachers' Association in the context of the death and infection of more than one person, including a teacher, with the symptoms of the virus in the last few days.
On Tuesday (June 2), the Association said it was possible to have five isolation centers at the Teachers Club's guest house in the city and five beds on the second floor of the Bangamata Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall and Medical Center on campus.
It is to be note that ICU setting is a time consuming, expensive and complex process. This requires the supervision of several specialist doctors and the ICU equipment needs to be imported from outside the country. The Teachers Association has already contacted ICU experts and manufacturers of ICU beds and sophisticated equipment. At the moment, it is very difficult to import these equipments due to suspension of international flights. In this case, the association thinks that it is not possible to install ICU facility, bed and necessary medical equipment on campus at the moment.
In this situation, a discussion is underway to get priority services for CU teachers through a bed donation from the Teachers' Association in the running private hospitals; the association source confirmed this to Barta24.com. According to sources, the arrangement can be made in consultation with the approved Chattogram University Maternal and Child Hospital and Southern Medical College.
The Teachers' Association has requested the Psychology department to provide special counseling services to teachers and students in this regard, citing the emotional distress of many teachers and their families at the moment. The department of Psychology has started a special clinical counseling service and six clinical counselors have been appointed for it.
The newly established Covid Testing Lab at the university will test only samples. University is not authorized to collect samples. In this regard initiatives have been taken by the Teachers' Association for collecting samples and speedy testing of the university teachers and discussions are underway with the Department of Health, City Corporation's booth, University Medical Center and Hathazari Health Complex.
The Teachers' Association also informed that if any teacher with Covid-19 needs to be admitted to the hospital instead of home isolation in special cases, special priority / arrangement to admit at Chattogram Field Hospital is being discussed.
