BERC chairman resigns amid protests

Chairman of Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) Md. Nurul Amin has resigned in the face of the movement of officials and employees. He was appointed as the chairman of the commission on March 22, 2023.

On Tuesday (August 20), the Chairman reportedly submitted his resignation letter citing personal reasons. In his resignation letter, he applied for effect from August 20.

The officers and employees of the commission gave a memorandum to the Chief Adviser on August 14, in which various irregularities and inconsistencies of the commission were highlighted. On August 13, the ultimatum of the resignation of the chairman and members of the Joint Commission was given to the officers-employees.

The commission has been on strike since August 18 demanding the resignation of the Chairman and Members. Car drivers and office assistants of the Chairman and Members also joined the movement. Motorists have stopped driving since August 19. On August 19, the chairman and members of the commission went to office under their own arrangement, but they were not seen in their office on August 20.

On August 20, Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) officials and employees at all levels observed a sit-in strike by closing the main gate. On this day, as the Chairman and 3 members of the commission did not come to the office, their rooms were closed.
