Prime Minister Mohammed Shatayeh and the Palestinian Authority (PA) government that governs parts of the occupied West Bank have submitted their resignations to President Mahmoud Abbas.

Al Jazeera reported this information on Monday (January 26).

In a statement on Monday, Shatayeh said the decision to resign was made in light of the unprecedented escalation of violence in the West Bank and Jerusalem, and the war, massacres and starvation in the Gaza Strip, the report said.

"The next phase and challenges require a new governmental and political system that takes into account the new realities of Gaza and establishes a Palestinian Authority based on Palestinian unity," he added.

In a report on a source close to the Palestinian leadership, Saudi Arabia's state media Al Arabiya said that President Abbas is planning to form a new government as soon as the Gaza war ends. Its main mission will be to secure Gaza and oversee its Gaza reconstruction. But it is also said that the new government will be formed with experts (technocrats) and not politicians.

Abbas is also discussing this with Arab leaders. He met King Abdullah II of Jordan for the last time. The Abbas administration has nominated Mohammad Mustafa, chairman of the board of directors of the Palestine Investment Fund, to form a new cabinet, according to reports.
