After a long decade, Pakistan's Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar will visit Bangladesh next month. Bangladesh's relations with the country have deepened since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina.
The last time a foreign minister from the country visited Dhaka was in 2012. This information was reported in a report by the country's media outlet The Express Tribune on Friday (January 3).
Dar said at a press conference last Thursday (January 2) that he would visit Dhaka in February at the invitation of the Bangladeshi Foreign Adviser. He said that the visit would discuss the development of the foreign policies of the two countries as well as future challenges.
The foreign minister also said that Bangladesh's chief adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus has also been invited to visit Islamabad to further strengthen mutual relations. He has accepted the invitation.
Previously, Hina Rabbani Khar visited Bangladesh as the last Pakistani foreign minister in 2012. She visited Dhaka at that time to invite the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for the D-8 summit.
The Express Tribune says that during Sheikh Hasina's 15-year tenure, relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh were strained. The Awami League leader did not reciprocate Pakistan's multiple attempts to establish relations with India.
Relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh have improved considerably since Hasina was ousted from power in August last year and fled to India following a bloody uprising. There have also been several developments at the highest levels between the two countries.
In the meantime, Bangladesh has announced an increase in bilateral trade and lifted the ban on Pakistani exports. In addition, the two countries have also started direct trade through sea routes.
Ishaq Dar called Bangladesh a 'fraternal country' and said that Pakistan will provide all kinds of assistance to Dhaka.
