Doctors on strike over rape case, India's health care at a standstill
Protests erupted across India over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata. The country's doctors have also joined the movement. They observed a 24-hour strike in protest against this brutal murder. The strike was called by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), an all-India body of doctors.
According to a BBC report, all types of 'non-emergency medical services' have been closed from 6 am on Saturday (August 17) to 6 am on Sunday. As a result, the outdoors did not open on Saturday.
According to the IMA, doctors will refrain from providing 24-hour services except for emergency services. The IMA described last week's killings as a "crime of barbaric scale due to the lack of safe space for women" and sought the country's support in its "struggle for justice". The organization called for protests against the attack and protection of women.
In a letter to Union Health Minister JP Nadda, the IMA outlined its five-point demand. These include – Enacting stricter laws to protect women. Strict security measures should be kept in hospitals like airports. Ensure a safe workplace for doctors. Victims' families should be compensated. They will not join the work unless security is assured. Hospitals in West Bengal have also come to a standstill.
Rumalika Kumar, a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, expressed her displeasure and said that their justice demands have not been fulfilled yet. She also demanded immediate arrest of all the culprits with proper evidence.
Doctors from Homeopathic Medical Association of India and Dental Association of India have also joined the IMA strike.
Bollywood stars Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra, Kareena Kapoor, Ayushmann Khurrana, Twinkle Khanna, Alia Bhatt and cricket stars Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Siraj and others have stood by the woman doctor's family in protest of this incident.
The murder of this female doctor was reported in the early hours of August 9. The post-graduate female doctor rested in the seminar room after serving on the fourth floor of RG Kar Hospital. Her body was found there in the morning. After that, the politics of West Bengal including that hospital became turbulent. Demonstrations and doctors' strikes have been going on for 9 days in protest against the murder.
