More than hundred JP candidates want to boycott the election!
Angry candidates left the constituency and started thronging Jatiya Party chairman's office in Banani. More than 15 candidates were seen around 1pm on Monday (December 25). They said that many more are on the way.
Among them were Pabna-1 constituency candidate Sardar Shahjahan, Bogra-1 constituency candidate Md. Golam Mostafa Babu Mondal, Aziz Ahmed Rubel of Bogra-6 Constituency, Aminul Islam Jhantu of Sirajganj-2 Constituency, Moktar Hossain of Sirajganj-6 Constituency and Aktaruzzaman Khan of Faridpur-1 Constituency.
If you want to know the reason for leaving the electoral field and coming to Dhaka, the candidate of Bogra-1 (Sariakandi-Sonatala) constituency said without any hesitation. Golam Mostafa Babu Mondal told Barta24.com, I called the party's general secretary, he did not receive. I have come to talk to the chairman and general secretary. If the party gives funds, I will vote, if not I will sit. Why should I spend my own money in this election to legitimize the government? Even if you pay Tk. 1000 per polling station, you need about Tk. 1.5 lakh per day.
He said that the party has reached an agreement with the government on 26 seats. By then the position was clear. If not compromise, there was another matter. At that time Awami League had a chance to win the anti vote. There will be four elections with this election, I have voted twice in Upazila Parishad. I was defeated in the last upazila parishad election by a margin of only 1 thousand votes. Due to compromise, voters have to face various questions.
Chairman GM Quader and secretary general Mujibul Haque Chunnu were supposed to hold office today, a candidate contesting from a seat in Noakhali district told Barta24.com on condition of anonymity. Because of that many people started coming. The afternoon news is that they are not coming today, they can come to the office tomorrow (December 26). So many people decided to come to Dhaka at night.
Regarding the reason for their coming to Dhaka, he said, we want to take a final decision by talking to the chairman and secretary general. If the party does not give the election funds, I will hold a press conference and withdraw from the election. There may be 50 to 70 candidates present there. This number may even cross the century.
He also said that when people ask for votes, why do you want votes? Jatiya Party has reached an agreement with Awami League. 26 have been sacrificed to ensure victory. Why should I spend my money now? If the party gives funds, I am in the election, if not, I am not. If I move now, I will avoid financial loss. After filing the nomination papers we were kept on till the day of withdrawal. The decision whether to go to the election is suspended. Because of this, we have fallen behind in the field.
3 Jatiya Party candidates have already withdrawn from the election by holding a press conference. Jatiya Party candidate for Sirajganj-3 (Rayganj-Tarash) constituency Zakir Hossain has announced to withdraw from the election on December 23. Jatiya Party Raiganj Upazila branch president Zakir Hossain told reporters that I was in the field till December 17 and did several election offices. Enthusiasm was created among the leaders and workers, but after 4 pm on December 17, it all died down. That is, on December 17, he indicated the compromise of 26 seats at the last moment.
On the other hand, the candidate of Natore-4 (Baraigram-Gurdaspur) constituency Alauddin Mridha has announced to withdraw from the election on December 21. He said that there is dissatisfaction among grassroot leaders and workers due to the sharing of seats with Awami League and the nomination of new ones in other constituencies of Natore. A candidate of Moulvibazar district also withdrew from the election.
Election Monitoring Committee of Jatiya Party has been formed under the leadership of general secretary Mujibul Haque Chunnu. A common question for those who are in touch with the committee is whether election funds will be given. Many people are also saying that they will leave if the election fund is not given.
A member of the Election Monitoring Committee and an organizing secretary of the Central Committee told Barta24.com on condition of anonymity that most of the calls are coming to know whether the money for election expenses will be paid. No decision on funding has been made yet. It has not been decided that the party will give funds, nor has it been decided that it will not be given.
Jatiya Party presidium member and election management committee member secretary Zahirul Islam Zahir told Barta24.com that yes some candidates are coming to Banani office. They want to inquire about the availability of party support.
He also said that he is not aware of any news that a large number are going to withdraw from the election.
On December 17, the last moment of withdrawal of nomination papers was dramatized. At the last minute, JP announced to participate in the elections. At the same time, Awami League held a separate press conference to confirm the fact that 26 seats were to be given to JP. Senior leaders and some sitting MPs not being on the compromise list, on the other hand suspicions and mistrust have increased over GM Quader's wife getting the Dhaka-18 seat.
A leadership crisis is already evident in JP. Among them, if these candidates withdraw from the election and become inactive, it can be a disaster for the party. Many candidates have given the appearance of non-existence of JP politics.
Jatiya Party participated in the election through various dramas. Begum Roushan Ershad, the chief patron of Jatiya Party and leader of the opposition in Parliament, withdrew from the election on November 29 due to the tension over the seat of his son Saad Ershad and the nomination of his followers was not confirmed. The party nominated party candidates for 294 seats, but 6 candidates were not finalized. They did not file nomination papers. After the scrutiny, the Election Commission declared the candidates of JP valid in 272 constituencies. On the last day of withdrawal of nomination papers (December 17), some candidates withdrew from the election. In the end, JP sources said that candidates got symbols in 265 seats.
