JU campus boiling with protests against rape
Enraged general students blockaded the administrative building of Mir Musharraf Hossain Hall of Jahangirnagar University (JU) in connection with the gang-rape of an outsider’s wife.
On Sunday (February 4), the teachers and students of the university protested throughout the day demanding justice for the rape incident. At 12:30 p.m., the students blocked the administrative building on the road adjacent to Shaheed Minar. Meanwhile, another delegation of students and teachers took a position in front of the Vice-Chancellor's office.
At that time, they made 3-point demands to JU Vice-Chancellor Professor Nurul Alam. The demands are - the university should immediately file a case against the accused as the plaintiff, the non-students should be expelled from the hall, this rape is not a syndicate without trial.
Professor Shamima Sultana, the president of the Bengali department, said that the university cannot run with such an atrocious administration. We have repeatedly told the administration that illegal students should not be allowed to stay in the hall. Because if they do something wrong, there is no justice for it. Now let's see how the 45th batch judges those who have committed crimes.
Demanding the cancellation of certificates of those involved, she further said, "My request to the students is that if you are vigilant, the administration cannot do whatever it wants."
The students demanded the resignation of the proctor accusing the proctor of neglecting his duties and helping the accused to escape. Alif Mahmud, Convener of Student Union JU Sangsad, said that in the presence of the proctor, the rapist Mustafiz managed to escape by breaking the lock of the hall canteen with the help of Chhatra League at around one in the morning. We want the resignation of this weak Proctor. Proctor has long since lost his moral claims to hold office. His role in this incident is also questionable. How could the rapist escape in the presence of the proctor?
JU Vice Chancellor Professor Nurul Alam said about the three-point demand of the students and the overall issue, a quick decision will be taken through an urgent syndicate meeting.
In this incident, the university administration started an emergency syndicate at 3 pm and ended at 6 pm. Then at 6:30 in the evening, the registrar of the university announced the decision taken by the syndicate in a press release. Abu Hasan said, taking the preliminary report of the Proctoral Body and taking the decision to file a case according to the prevailing law, suspending the certificate of the main accused Mostafiz and declaring him undesirable in the university campus, temporary expulsion and suspension of Murad's certificate, suspension of Shah Paran's certificate, suspension of Sabbir Ahmed Sagar. Temporary expulsion and suspension of certificate, ASM Mustafa Manowar Siddiqui temporary expulsion and suspension of certificate, Hasan suspension of certificate and declared undesirable on campus.
In addition, a four-member investigation committee has been formed with Dr. Ajit Kumar Majumdar as its president. The committee is asked to submit its report within 15 working days. The other members of the committee are - Professor of Public Administration Department Muhammad Saydur Rahman, Associate Professor of Urban and Regional Planning Department Afsana Haque. Besides, Deputy Registrar (Law) Mahtab-uz-Zahid has been made Member Secretary.
