Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that those who have committed murder, looting and terrorist activities, whoever they are, measures will be taken to ensure that they get appropriate punishment. I further declare that a judicial inquiry will be conducted in the interest of fair trial and justice in all the unintended incidents including the murders. On whose instigation the conflict started, who for what purpose pushed the country to an anarchic situation, will be investigated.

Addressing the nation on Wednesday evening, she urged the agitators to be patient until the verdict of the Supreme Court. She said, I believe they will get justice, don't be disappointed. Prime Minister started her speech at 7:30 PM. Finished at 7:38 PM. At that time, the Prime Minister was wearing a black saree. In the 8-minute speech, the Prime Minister said, "I have appeared before you today with a heavy heart." We are working tirelessly for the economic and social development of the people of independent Bangladesh, which was obtained in exchange of the blood of lakhs of martyrs.

Sheikh Hasina said, we have been able to change the destiny of the people of Bangladesh in the last 15 years. We have started the journey of providing better life to the people by providing education-initiation, knowledge-science-technology and providing food-clothing-shelter-medical-education to fulfill the basic needs of people. I have also achieved many successes. Bangladesh has been able to hold a dignified seat in the world court. Still, we have a long way to go. When the people of Bangladesh return to a little peace and quiet, sometimes something happens that is very painful. She said that in 2018, in view of the students’ movement, the government issued a circular canceling the quota system in government jobs. Subsequently, the High Court quashed the 2018 government circular in favor of maintaining the quota on behalf of the freedom fighters.

The Government appealed to the Supreme Court to uphold the circular and the Hon'ble Court fixed a date for hearing. At this time, the students again started a movement with the demand of quota reform. The government has shown considerable patience and tolerance since the beginning of this movement. Instead, the police cooperated in ensuring the security of the protesters. When the agitators expressed their desire to submit memorandums to His Excellency the President, they were given the opportunity and security arrangements were also made.

The Prime Minister said that the sad thing is that some vested interest groups have started different kinds of speeches and terrorist activities to fulfill their ambitions based on this movement. As the matter has been appealed to the Supreme Court, everyone is requested to be patient. It is a matter of great regret that some quarters took the opportunity of this movement to indulge in acts of terrorism to fulfill their undesired ambitions.

As a result, all the events that have taken place around these young students' movement are very painful and sad. How many precious lives were lost unnecessarily? Who knows more than me the pain of losing your loved ones? Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, I wish the souls of those who died. Deepest condolences to the family members. I condemn every killing. What happened was never intended. In Chattogram, terrorists brutally threw students from the roof of a multi-storey building to kill them, severing the limbs of many students. Hitting them with sticks and sharp weapons, one died, many fought to the death. In Dhaka, Rangpur and Rajshahi universities, the Vice-Chancellor's residence and student halls were set on fire and vandalized. Sheikh Hasina said that ordinary pedestrians, shopkeepers were attacked and even ambulances carrying patients were obstructed. In the girls' hall, female students were attacked and assaulted. Provosts have been threatened and assaulted in residence halls. The teachers were assaulted.

The Prime Minister said, I believe that these terrorists have nothing to do with those involved in the quota reform movement. Rather, terrorists are entering into them and creating conflict and anarchy. Those involved in such incidents will be identified and punished accordingly. I will provide all necessary support to the families of those who have confessed to murder. The Prime Minister also said that I am very concerned about the security of the protesting young students. These terrorists can harm them by creating an atmosphere of conflict at any time. So I would appeal to the parents, guardians and teachers of the students to be vigilant about the safety of their children. At the same time, the safety of students of all educational institutions is specially monitored. She said that the government has appealed to the Supreme Court against the verdict of the High Court.

A hearing date has been fixed in the Court of Appeal. The court has created an opportunity to hear the students if they have any statement. There is an opportunity to resolve the issue through this legal process. Despite the opportunity to resolve this legal process, do not allow the perpetrators to clash by taking to the streets. I specially request everyone to wait patiently till the verdict of Supreme Court. I believe our student society will get justice from the court and will not be disappointed. She said, InshAllah, our dear mother in the spirit of liberation war will prevail. We will make the land a smart Bangladesh with the cooperation of all. I once again express my deepest condolences to those who lost their lives in this unfortunate incident and my condolences to the family members.
