Jail escapee convicted in a rape case arrested

The accused Majnu, who was sentenced to life in the case of raping a student of Dhaka University in the capital's Kurmitola four years ago, was arrested by the police.

On Saturday (21 September) at midnight, the police arrested him from the railway line behind the Kuratali BRTC bus counter in Dhaka.

Majnu, who was sentenced to life imprisonment, was imprisoned in Kashimpur Jail. After the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5, he escaped from the prison and went into hiding during the attack on the prison. In this incident, a case was registered in his name at Gazipur Kashimpur police station.

On January 5, 2020, a student of Dhaka University was raped in the area adjacent to the golf club in Kurmitola. The next day, her father filed a case at the Cantonment police station. Protests were held in different parts of the country, including Dhaka University, demanding the arrest and trial of the accused. Death penalty is the maximum punishment for rapists.
