Consumer protection raids to stabilize commodity prices, 30 firms fined

The National Directorate of Consumer Rights Protection has conducted raids in the daily commodity markets in 17 districts of the country to keep the prices stable. Meanwhile, 30 companies were fined a total of Tk. 2 lakh 23 thousand.

The Directorate of Consumer Protection announced this information in a circular on Friday (October 18).

According to the notification, on Friday, operations were conducted to stabilize the prices of daily necessities including vegetables, eggs, broiler chickens, potatoes, pulses, onions, garlic, ginger and edible oil in all departments and districts of the country including the capital. The raids were conducted by Consumer Rights along with a special task force.

On this day, 5 teams under the leadership of 5 officials of the Directorate conducted market raids and market surveillance activities in Dhaka Metropolitan area. A special operation was conducted on the basis of information that Bismillah Store in Mohammadpur Krishi Market of Dhaka Metropolis was selling eggs at a higher price than the government fixed price. The operation was conducted by the Assistant Director of the Dhaka district office of the directorate Abdul Jabbar Mandal.

During the raids, evidence was found that each egg was sold at 13 taka 33 paisa instead of the retail price set by the government at 11 taka 87 paisa and as a precaution, the company was fined Tk. 30 thousand as it promised to sell eggs at the price set by the government in the future.

Meanwhile, raids were conducted at an egg supplier named Albania International in Baitul Aman housing area under Adabar police station. The organization was fined Tk. 50,000 for various crimes including not keeping cash memos for buying eggs, not having carbon copies of cash memos for selling eggs, and selling eggs at prices higher than the government's fixed price.

Also, this campaign was conducted simultaneously in 17 districts of the country including other divisional cities. 30 institutions were fined a total of Tk. 2 lakh 23 thousand through the operation of 21 teams across the country.

It has also been informed that this activity of the directorate will continue to protect consumer rights.
