Chief Adviser calls for raising country's climate crisis concerns at COP29
Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Yunus has called for extra efforts by delegates to raise the country's climate crisis concerns at the COP29.
He made the call in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, on Monday (November 11) to lead Bangladesh at the annual UN Climate Change Conference.
He told the Bangladesh delegation at a coordination meeting at a hotel in Baku, "Our main effort will be to include our concerns and demands in the final declaration of COP29."
In the meeting, Environment Secretary Farhina Ahmed briefed the officials about Bangladesh's position on some important issues of the conference.
Farhina Ahmed said Bangladesh has formed nine groups to discuss all major areas at the summit, including climate finance, damage and mitigation, and just the transition and adaptation process. At least 29 NGOs and civil society groups from Bangladesh are attending COP29.
He said that despite the assurances of the rich countries of the Global North, Bangladesh has so far received 344 million US dollars in grants and 250 million US dollars in loans as climate finance.
Earlier, the Chief Advisor's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said that the Chief Adviser will be on an official visit to Azerbaijan from November 11-14 on the occasion of the climate conference.
He said that the Chief Advisor will have a very busy time during this visit. Bangladesh, one of the climate-vulnerable countries, will present its demands in Baku and the losses Bangladesh is facing due to climate change to the world.
Earlier, at 5.15 pm local time, Bangladesh's Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus arrived in Baku.
He will attend the main summit of COP29 tomorrow (Tuesday) and will speak at least three important events.
