Jamaat expels those who insulted freedom fighter in Cumilla
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has condemned and protested the incident of insulting freedom fighter Abdul Hai alias Kanu (78) in Chauddagram, Cumilla. The organization has expelled two people involved in the incident. They have also demanded their arrest.
On Monday (December 23), Jamaat-e-Islami Cumilla South District Ameer Advocate Md. Shahjahan, Secretary Dr. Sarwar Uddin Siddiqui, Chauddagram Upazila Ameer Md. Mahfuzur Rahman and Secretary Md. Belal Hossain issued a joint statement expressing strong condemnation and protest.
The statement said, “ It has come to our attention regarding the incident of insulting freedom fighter Abdul Hai Kanu of Chauddagram, Cumilla district, published in various newspapers, electronic media and social media in the country. We strongly condemn and protest this sad incident.
In the attached statement, they further said, "The freedom fighters are the best sons of the nation. Jamaat-e-Islami does not support harassing not only the brave freedom fighters but also any ordinary citizen of the country. We strongly demand from the government to quickly arrest those involved in this sad incident and hand them over to the law."
They said, "Those involved in this incident are not leaders or activists of Jamaat-e-Islami at any level. No leader or activist of Jamaat-e-Islami supports or condones taking the law into one's own hands in any way. We have learned through local inquiries that Mr. Abdul Hai Kanu is an accused in 9 cases, including a murder case, in his own area. We believe that the law enforcement agencies will take appropriate action against him in this regard. No one has the right to take the law into their own hands. We demand punishment for Abul Hashem, who is in Dhaka, and Ahidur Rahman, who returned from Dubai, who were involved in the incident, and we urge the countrymen not to take the law into their own hands under any circumstances." The concerned district and upazila leaders said in the statement, "We are Md. Abul Hashem, father-late Abdul Barek, Sang-Kuliara and Md. Ohidur Rahman, father-late Shafiqur Rahman, Sang-Kuliara, and those involved in this incident are demanding punishment and are being expelled from Jamaat-e-Islami despite being supporters for violating the discipline and degrading the image and dignity of Jamaat-e-Islami.”
