The arrested persons attempted to rob the Jinjira branch of Rupali Bank to help a kidney patient, said Dhaka District Superintendent of Police (SP) Ahmed Mueed at a press conference on Thursday (December 19).
He said, "We quickly went to the spot after receiving information about the attempted dacoity and hostage taking at the bank through a call from the National Emergency Service 999. We tried to convince the dacoits in various ways. First, the weapons were recovered from them. Later, they were not in the custody of the police after convincing them in various ways.
After the arrest, during the initial interrogation, the dacoits said that they committed this act after suffering from a fantasy after watching a movie or video game. They had taken Tk.18 lakh in their bags. They said that they would help a kidney patient with this money. They also said that they planned to buy an iPhone with this money.
Of the three arrested, two are from Keraniganj and the other is from Kashiani, Gopalganj.
Those arrested in the bank dacoity incident are Sharafat, Shifat and Nirab. The four pistols recovered from them are not real, but toys, confirmed Keraniganj Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sohrab Al Hasan. He said that the recovered weapons include 4 toy pistols, 2 knives and a drill machine.
Earlier, on Thursday (December 19) at around 2 pm, the robbers entered the bank. At that time, when the news of the robbery was reported from the microphone of the nearby mosque, several hundred locals surrounded the bank branch and locked it from outside. Later, teams of police, RAB, fire service and army reached the spot and surrounded the bank.
It is learnt that after the news of the robbery gang's attack on the bank spread, an eager crowd gathered there. At that time, traffic on both sides of the main road adjacent to the bank was stopped for security reasons. In addition, an announcement was made from the microphone of the nearby mosque for the robbery gang to surrender. They surrendered towards evening due to the efforts of law enforcement agencies.
