The parliamentary committee has suggested not to re-open the loss-making jute mills officially. They have said that there is no reason for the government to waste money by launching these jute mills.

The issue was discussed at a meeting of the parliamentary committee held at the parliament building on Monday (January 7).

Presided over by Vice- Principal Abdus Shahid, Committee members Nur-e-Alam Chowdhury, Yusuf Abdullah Harun, AB Tajul Islam, Ahsan Adelur Rahman, Wasika Ayesha Khan and Khadijatul Anwar were present in the meeting.

Regarding the meeting, President Abdus Shahid said the project was undertaken for the development of three jute mills. But the government has closed those jute mills. Many questions have been raised about whether the new jute mill will be officially launched or not. We have said that whether these will be introduced or not is a matter for the government to decide. However, we think that there is no reason for the government to waste money by introducing those which are not profitable.

He added that some projects, though small, have been taken up without feasibility study. We also felt that these would not be effective in the public interest. Although the implementation period of some projects is already over but the implementation is only 5 percent. The ministry also argued. They said these were decided without necessity. We recommend rewards and punishments. I have said that if someone does something wrong, he should be punished, and if someone does a good deed, he should be rewarded.

Mentioning that the progress in the construction work of Mujibkella has been less, the chairman of the committee said that the real progress of this project is not desired. Of course there were real problems. The BUET report was inaccurate. It has been done properly since the DUET. If the engineers report contradict, the implementation authority will have a problem. We have asked for reasonable implementation steps in the future.

The ministry also argued. They said these were decided without necessity. We recommended rewards and punishments. I have said that if someone does wrong, he should be punished, and if someone does good, he should be rewarded.

The committee has recommended that vehicles be provided to local level officials of the disaster ministry.
