The Search Committee will seat with 60 prominent citizens

Dhaka: The search committee will hold a meeting with 60 prominent citizens of different professions to form a new election commission. The meeting will be held next Saturday (February 12).

The information was given by Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam after a meeting of the committee at the Supreme Court's Judges Lounge on Tuesday (January 8).

He said the notables would be invited to attend the meeting from Wednesday via email and other means. He added that political parties have already sent names of many.

Earlier, a meeting was held at 4:30 pm at the Supreme Court Judges Lounge, chaired by Justice Obaidul Hasan, Chairman of the search committee and attended by members of the committee, Justice SM Quddus Zaman of the High Court, Auditor General and Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) Mohammad Muslim Chowdhury, PSC Chairman Sohrab Hossain, former Election Commissioner Sohul Hossain and Professor Anwara Syed Haque.

The Cabinet Secretary further said that after the meeting with eminent citizens, the search committee will also sit with 10 senior journalists.

Earlier, the first meeting of the search committee was held in the afternoon of February 8. After the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam told reporters that the search committee would hold a total of three meetings with eminent persons on Saturday and Sunday.

Meanwhile, after the first meeting, the cabinet department issued a notification asking for names by email by February 10.

The notification said the search committee would carry out its duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners Appointment Law 2022. The Cabinet Division will provide necessary secretarial assistance in the performance of the search committee.
