The immediate past High Commissioner of Bangladesh to India and, former Foreign Secretary Syed Moazzem Ali is no more. (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilahi Razun). He breathed his last at the Combined Military Hospital in the capital at 11.55 noon on Monday(Dec.30). He died of cardiac failure. He was 75.
Syed Moazzam Ali had been working at the Pakistan Embassy in Washington, USA, in 1971. At that time, he rebelled against Pakistan and declared loyalty to an independent Bangladesh and established a temporary Bangladesh embassy in Washington.
Moazzem Ali joined Pakistan Foreign Service in 1968. He has served as Bangladesh Ambassador to Bhutan, Iran and France. Worked in New Delhi missions along with Washington, Warsaw, Jeddah.
He last served as High Commissioner of Bangladesh to India.
Earlier, the diplomat retired after taking over as the Foreign Secretary in 2001.
After serving in New Delhi mission for five years he returned to Dhaka recently after completing his duties as High Commissioner to Bangladesh. Just a month of retirement was not even spent. He was alive even this morning.
He was born in Sylhet on July 18, 1944. His father was historian Syed Mustafa Ali. Mustafa Ali was the eldest of three brothers. Historian Syed Murtaza Ali was his second uncle. The younger uncle was a renowned littérateur of Bangla literature, Syed Mujtaba Ali, a multilingual scholar. The ancestral residence of Syed Moazzem Ali was in the Khandakar house of Uttarsur village in Bahubal upazila of Habiganj district.
But later their family moved to Moulvibazar. He passed matriculation from Moulvibazar Government High School in 1960. He did his Masters in Zoology in 1966 from Dhaka University as a resident student of FH hall.
