There have been allegations of an attempt to kill Hasnat Abdullah and Sarjis Alam, the central leaders of the anti-discrimination student movement, by running over their convoy with a truck while they were returning from the funeral of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif in Lohagara, Chattogram. The police have detained the truck along with the driver in this incident.
The incident took place at around 7:30 pm on Wednesday (November 27) at the Haji Road intersection in Chunati Union on the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar highway.
Mumin Farhad, Second Officer of Lohagara Police Station, confirmed the truth of the incident to Barta24.com. He said, "We have detained the truck along with the driver in this incident and brought them to the police station. We are questioning him about the allegations of attempted murder. Details will be announced later."
The police officer also said that coordinators Hasnat and Sarjis were not in that vehicle. However, it was their convoy. There were four people in the black private car, including the driver. One of them was student movement leader Md. Ali Newaz. The names of the others are not yet known. However, although the front part of the private car was damaged in the incident, no one in the car was seriously injured.
Meanwhile, shortly before 10 pm, Chattogram coordinator Khan Talat Mahmud Rafi Nier went live on Facebook. In the title of the live, he complained about the assassination attempt and wrote, 'Our security is at risk. May Allah protect us. On our way back from visiting the grave of martyred advocate Saiful Islam Arif Bhai, an attempt was made to kill us by running over us with a truck at approximately 7:30 pm.'
