In 1975, when Lebanon was facing a civil war, Hassan Nasrullah joined the Shia movement 'Amal'. Later spent some time in Najaf, Iraq, in an educational institution of the Shia Muslim community. From there, he returned to Lebanon and joined Amal again. In 1982 he left the party along with some others. Israel invaded Lebanon a few days before this incident.
'Islamic Amaal' was established after breaking away from Amaal. The group receives notable military and organizational support from neighboring Iran's Revolutionary Guards. Lebanon's Bekaa Valley-based group 'Islamic Amal' later established itself as the most prominent and effective Shia militia group. At one stage it became the armed Hezbollah organization.
