Hasim Safiuddin tipped as the next head of Hezbollah

Hasim Safiuddin tipped as the next head of Hezbollah

After Hassan Nasrullah was killed in an Israeli airstrike, discussions are going on about who will take over Hezbollah. On Saturday (September 28), the news agency Reuters reported that Hashim Safiuddin may take the responsibility of the next head of the armed group. He is the head of Hezbollah's executive council.

Earlier, 64-year-old Hasan Nasrullah led the group for 32 consecutive years. Last Friday, Nasrullah was killed in an airstrike in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon.

A Hezbullah source said Hasim Safiuddin could be seen as the new Secretary General. He oversees the group's political affairs. He is also a member of the Jihad Council, which oversees the group's military operations.

Another identity of Hasim Safiuddin is that he is the distant brother of Nasrullah. He is also a religious figure. Besides, he also claims himself as a very close descendant of the last Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

In 2017, he was designated as a terrorist by the US State Department. After the killing of a Hezbollah commander last June, he threatened to take major revenge against Israel. Safiuddin then said, 'Tell the enemy to prepare for weeping and wailing.'

Hashim Safiuddin often made statements to the people of the country. In his speech, the issues of Hezbollah's military position and support for the Palestinians were raised.

“Our history, our guns and our rockets are all with you," he told Palestinians at a recent event at Hezbollah's stronghold in Beirut's southern suburb of Dahiyeh.

Analysts believe that Hashim Safiuddin's family relationship and physical resemblance to Nasrullah and the fact that he is also a descendant of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) may make it easier for him to take control of Hezbollah. Hezbollah was born in Lebanon 42 years ago with the help of Iran. The former head of the group was killed by Israel in a helicopter attack in 1992. After that Hassan Nasrullah took charge of Hezbollah.
