Putin congratulates Trump
Republican candidate Donald Trump has been elected the 47th president of the United States. Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Trump a day after the official results were announced.
According to Reuters, Putin spoke publicly about Trump after his victory at an event in the Russian city of Sochi on Thursday (November 7) local time. He even said he was ready to sit with Trump.
Putin said, "In my opinion, he (Trump) behaved in a very correct way, with courage, like a real man. I take this opportunity to congratulate him on winning the election."
The Russian president said that Trump's comments on Ukraine during the US presidential election campaign and his statements about restoring relations with Russia are important.
Earlier during the election campaign, Trump said that if he was elected president, he would restore peace to Ukraine within 24 hours. However, he did not give any details on how he would end Europe's longest war since World War II.
Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday that Russia is carefully monitoring the US presidential election data. There is no possibility of making a formal assessment until we see concrete statements and initiatives. Putin congratulated Trump just a day later.
