Bangladesh wants strong support of the international community for the repatriation of Rohingya
Bangladesh has sought strong support from the international community for the speedy, safe and dignified repatriation of Rohingyas who were forcibly displaced from their country Myanmar.
A high-level meeting held at the Prime Minister's Office on Sunday (June 11) urged the international community to increase its support on the Rohingya issue.
The meeting chaired by the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister Tofazzel Hossain Mia was attended by foreign ambassadors and representatives of international organizations residing in Dhaka.
According to a press release, the meeting emphasized increasing international support for the rapid, safe, dignified and permanent repatriation of Bangladesh Rohingyas to their home land.
The Principal Secretary said that the only solution to this crisis lies in the dignified and permanent repatriation of the Rohingyas to their motherland Myanmar.
Highlighting the government's position on this matter, he said, there is no chance for Rohingyas to integrate with the locals. Tofajzel Hossain sought the cooperation of the participants in building temporary shelters for the displaced people.
Gwen Lewis, the UN Resident Coordinator in Dhaka, highlighted the reduction in allocations by the World Food Program and other donor agencies for humanitarian food aid to the Rohingya amid the global economic crisis.
In the meeting, the ambassadors of Saudi Arabia, Iran, Palestine, Turkey, Qatar, Kuwait and China highlighted the positions of their respective countries and reiterated their commitment to stand by any initiative of Bangladesh to deal with the Rohingya crisis.
Foreign Minister Masood Bin Momen, Public Security Department Secretary Mustafizur Rahman, Prime Minister's Office Secretary Mohammad Mohammad Salahuddin and Disaster Management and Relief Secretary Kamrul Hasan were present.
