Law enforcement forces clash with workers in Ashulia, 1 killed in firing
Law enforcement forces clashed with garment workers in Savar's Ashulia. A person named Kawsar Hossain Khan (27) was shot and killed. Also at least 30 people were injured including two shot. At least 5 law enforcement vehicles were vandalized.
The incident took place in front of Mandal Group in Jirabo area of Tongi-Ashulia-EPZ road around 11:30 on Monday (September 30).
The operations in-charge Nasir of Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar confirmed the death.
The deceased Kawsar Hossain Khan worked in a factory named Mango Text Limited.
Initially, the names of two people who were shot were among the injured. They are Habib, a worker of Natural Denims and Nazmul Hasan, a worker of Natural Indigo Factory. The identity of the rest is not known.
According to the workers, a tripartite meeting of the management, labor representatives and law enforcement forces was going on with the workers of Mandal Group this morning. As there was no agreement, the workers came out of the factory and took a stand. Later workers from other factories started gathering there. At that time, when the law enforcement forces and the workers took a face-to-face position, the workers vandalized five RAB and police cars. To bring the situation under control, the members of law and order forces started lathi charge. Later, when the workers became more agitated, the police opened fire. When five people were shot, they were admitted to the local PMK Hospital and Enam Medical in Savar. At that time, the doctor on duty of Enam Medical declared Kawsar Hossain dead.
Several attempts were made to contact Superintendent of Police of Shilpa Police-1 Sarwar Alam about the incident but he was not available.
