‘India’s data on violence against minorities is misleading’

The Chief Adviser’s Press Wing has claimed that the reports published in the Indian media on minority oppression in Bangladesh are misleading and exaggerated.

This information was given on the Chief Adviser (CA) Press Wing Facts page on social media Facebook on Friday (December 20).

It is said that several Indian media outlets, including India Today, Anandabazar, citing the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, have reported that there were 47 incidents of violence against Hindus in Bangladesh in 2022, 302 in 2023 and 2,200 in 2024. The information is misleading and exaggerated.

According to the independent human rights organization Ain O Salish Kendra, the number of violent incidents against religious minorities in Bangladesh from January to November 2024 was 138, in which 368 houses were attacked and 82 people were injured.

The interim government of Bangladesh is investigating each incident and is committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice. According to the police headquarters, at least 97 cases were registered between August 4 and December 10 and 75 people have been arrested since August for attacks on religious minorities.

Most of these incidents took place between August 5 and August 8, when there was no government in the country. Most of these attacks were politically motivated.

The press wing said it would like to request everyone to refrain from spreading misleading information about such crimes.
