Country's development is not possible by bypassing the hilly region: Chief Adviser

Dhaka: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus believes that Bangladesh's development is not possible by bypassing the hilly region.

He said this in a message given on Monday (December 2) on the occasion of 'Chattogram Hill Tracts Accord Day'.

The Chief Adviser said that one-tenth of the country's total area is inhabited by the people of the hilly region. Therefore, Bangladesh's development is not possible by bypassing the hilly region.

He said that various reforms have been taken by involving the local people to preserve the natural beauty of the hilly districts and expand the tourism industry. This will reduce unemployment, accelerate economic development and improve living standards and eliminate social inequality.

He also said that collective efforts of all are necessary to continue the journey of peace, harmony, development and progress in the lives of all residents of the Chattogram Hill Tracts.

The Chief Adviser said, I am happy to know that like every year, the 'Chattogram Hill Tracts Accord Day-2024' is being celebrated. On this occasion, I extend my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to all the people of the Chattogram Hill Tracts region of the country.

He said, on this day in 1997, the agreement was signed between the Bangladesh Government and the Chattogram Hill Tracts Jana Sanghati Samiti. It was a political agreement, also known as the Peace Agreement.

Professor Muhammad Yunus said, the interim government formed through the mass uprising of students, workers and the people is committed to building a new Bangladesh free from discrimination by keeping the bond of communal harmony intact.

The Chief Adviser wished for the overall success of the 'Chattogram Hill Tracts Accord Day-2024'.
