Reproductive crisis of Tilanag Eagles for want of tall trees
Large birds need tall trees. However, it must be a native species of tree. The lack of tall or tall native trees has greatly affected the breeding of some birds.
High mountain trees like Bailam, Garjan, Chapalish, Gamar, Telsur, Teak, Jarul etc. are no longer seen in our evergreen natural forest where they are lost. The greedy eyes of the organized thieves have made these precious trees stand alone with some people who are dependent on a class of unscrupulous forest rangers. As a result, our biodiversity is under serious threat today.
Due to the lack of these tall trees, the bird that is facing the most reproductive crisis is called 'Tilanag Eagle'. The English name of the Tilanag eagle is Crested Serpent Eagle and the scientific name is Spilornis cheela. This bird is like a kite in shape. Length is about 56 to 74 cm. They have crests on their necks and numerous white sesame seeds on their dark-brown bodies.
Jahangirnagar University Professor of Zoology and wildlife researcher Dr. Kamrul Hasan said, "It can be said that this bird has decreased from before. For example, before there were big trees in the village, especially Shimul trees. They would sit quietly on a big tree. Whenever it saw a prey from below, it would come down from above and take away the prey. Large tall trees have also been uprooted from our natural forests. As a result, the birds that survive by sheltering big trees are in crisis. '
He added, "Snakes are one of their main foods. It grabs the snake by the legs and kills it while sitting on the tree or sitting on the ground. As a result, they play a major role in controlling the reproduction of snakes. Not only in the villages, but also in the forests, the number of giant trees is decreasing. As a result, they are in a crisis of reproduction.
Mentioning the main cause of the reproductive crisis Dr. Kamrul said they need tall trees. They make nests in the branches of tall trees during the breeding season. Today the tall trees around us, that is, the village or the forest are on the verge of extinction. Some forests have tall trees; again, some forests do not have them. As a result, the existence of large birds of this species is under serious threat.
Referring to the need for native species of trees, he said, "We used to see all the native species of trees in the rural areas in our time." But now the native species of trees are not seen. Acacia and eucalyptus trees are now scattered in most of the villages. Although eucalyptus is a tall tree, it is not at all suitable for nesting birds. Due to the lack of native trees, the breeding crisis of birds is becoming severe.
Considering the environment, nature and biodiversity, we have to preserve the huge trees of our native species without cutting them in any way, said wildlife researcher Dr. Kamrul Hasan.
