’37 lakh out of 1 crore TCB family card holders are fake’

37 lakh out of 1 crore TCB family card holders are fake, said SK Bashir Uddin, Commerce Adviser to the interim government.

He made this statement at the White Paper Preparation Committee 2024 Symposium, Economic Management, Reforms and National Budget exchange meeting at BICC, Agargaon, in the capital on Saturday (January 18).

The Commerce Advisor said, ‘The movement has taken place because inequality has arisen in the society which can be removed through policy changes.’

Regarding taxes, he said, ‘Both direct and indirect taxes are important. And more important is their implementation.

Despite the economic recession, banks made illegal profits last December, which should be investigated, the Commerce Adviser also commented.

At the same discussion, Dr. Debapriya Bhattacharya, Honorary Fellow of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) and Head of the White Paper Preparation Committee, criticized the decision to increase VAT.

He said, “We are surprised to see how indiscriminately VAT has been increased. To collect tax, we have to gradually go to the direct tax payers. We have not seen any plan for direct tax collection. We do not know what action is being taken against those who do not pay tax. This has worried us. We fear that the fuel situation will become more complicated next summer.”

Stating that despite producing record quantities of aman, the collection drive has not been successful, the economist said, “The corruption that was there before in the collection drive is still there. Farmers are not getting the price of their crops. Social security is in a state of chaos.”

The economist questioned what kind of economic legacy this government will leave behind. We have not seen any outline of the kind of administrative structure or reforms that are needed to build a balanced, inclusive, sustainable economy,” said Debapriya Bhattacharya.
