Dhaka: After a night-long chase and counter-chase, the seven colleges of the capital are finally parting ways with Dhaka University.
On Monday (January 27), after an emergency meeting of the DU VC with the principals of the seven colleges, Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan announced this decision at a press briefing.
In a written statement, the Vice Chancellor said, "I express my regret for the unpleasant incident at DU-seven colleges. After considering the overall issues in the emergency meeting, a decision has been taken to honorably separate Dhaka University and seven colleges. Admissions for students of seven colleges under Dhaka University have been stopped from the 2024-25 academic year.
Other decisions are that the meeting strongly recommended that the activities of the next academic year be conducted through an expert committee formed by the Ministry of Education on December 29, 2024, from the 2024-2025 academic year. From the 2024-2025 academic year, an expert committee formed by the ministry will decide on all matters, including determining the number of seats and admission fees for students.
However, the DU Vice-Chancellor said that the university administration will be responsible for ensuring that the educational life of students who are currently under the ongoing education programs of Dhaka University is not affected in any way.
It is worth noting that the capital's Dhaka College, Eden College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Women's College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Government Titumir College and Mirpur Government Bangla College were affiliated to Dhaka University.
In view of the academic and administrative success of these seven colleges in the capital, former Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University (DU) AAMS Arefin Siddique took them under the umbrella of a public university.
Since then, there have been several movements to exclude them from the affiliation of Dhaka University.
